I guess I'm new to your forum, but not to modeling; began in 1954 with airplanes and Highway Pioneers cars. At age 72, my goal is to finish up the collection I began in the late '50s, and do a few significant vehicles from my life.
I had a preference for "Kustoms" back when; being of limited means, models were (are!) the only way I can get my taste/style onto cars. I am still finishing a '60 Merc that I bought from Model World in N.J. (?) back then- among others. Goes without saying that my kits were in storage for quite a while (in '68 the draft reeled me in, and I figured "With my luck, it'll be 'Nam and a really mean Charlie to end my tale" but that didn't happen; I've worked on my stuff on and off since unpacked in the '80s. Mostly, I'm 'restoring' kits that I embarrassed my self on, in the day, or finishing ones that I didn't have the skill or materials to do in the interim. I have always been very busy building or restoring 1:1 cars and pickups of all kinds, usually substituting labor and skill for stuff you buy at great expense; just about all kinds. I'm about done with that -- the cost these days vs. my income as a retired person (teacher) has discouraged me severely.
I really appreciate and utilize auto-aftermarket materials -- since I'm familiar with them -- as opposed to stuff from the scale model world; fillers, primers and paints, abrasives, and all that. Having a retirement job in a PPG dealer, I have squirreled away lots of auto paints for use on my kits.
I have sorted all my stash, and find I have quite a few "new" parts as surplus, all 1:24/25 scale: wheel covers, bumpers and grilles, and so forth from AMT/SMP/Monogram/Revell/Aurora and some others. On the other hand, I still need a few things to finish my collection; specifically a rear bumper from the AMT '60 Bonneville, likewise from the SMP '61 Impala, drivers side grille half from the AMT '63 Pontiac LeMans, etc. I'd be glad to make a favorable trade from my surplus for any of the above, even if they need replating. Also, I'm looking for competition type tires, like the Firstone Speedsports from the 'fifties; the newer stiff just looks wrong on my oldies. I'm a sucker for Halibrand comp wheels, and can't find much that looks right on the resin market; I'd appreciate tips for sources.
I hope to learn resin casting next, and making decals; I can see that is what puts a good model into the next category. Thanks for listening!
